Reading habits: a case study of young ecuadorian university students
Keywords:
reading habits, academic performance, skills, mental stimulationAbstract
Objective: This study examined the reading habits of first-year university students in Ecuador, given the growing concern about the lack of interest in reading and its relationship to academic performance. Methodology: The research was conducted through a survey of 112 students, applying a descriptive approach and a non-experimental design. The main objectives were to identify reading frequency, types of material read, motivations, and differences between academic disciplines. Results and Discussion: The results revealed that most students rarely read outside of their academic obligations, devoting less than two hours per week to reading. They preferred novels and blogs, motivated primarily by entertainment. Furthermore, a preference for physical formats was notable, although many also used digital formats. Conclusion: The intensive use of digital media (1-4 hours daily) competed for their attention, negatively affecting their reading habits. Despite the low frequency of reading, students recognized its positive influence on academic performance and expressed interest in participating in programs that fostered reading habits. Contribution: These findings underscored the need to implement initiatives that promote a balance between digital media use and reading, which is vital for young people's comprehensive development.
