Abstract

Objective. Purpose: The study examined the perceptions, level of knowledge, and willingness of Nigerian archivists to optimize blockchain technology in records management within the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). Design/Methodology/Approach: Using a comprehensive sampling method (census), 15 archivists were selected from six archival institutions representing Nigeria's six geopolitical zones. Data were collected via an electronically administered open-ended survey. Responses were analyzed thematically to identify patterns regarding perceptions, knowledge, and willingness to adopt and optimize blockchain technology in records management. Results/Discussion: The findings indicate that Nigerian archivists generally hold a positive perception of blockchain technology and recognize its potential to improve records management when properly optimized. Some archivists viewed blockchain as having the capacity to transform archival practice by enhancing efficiency, reducing human error in repetitive tasks, strengthening records management processes, and boosting archival services, while also acknowledging potential workforce displacement. Conclusions: Although Nigerian archivists demonstrate knowledge and generally positive perceptions regarding blockchain technology, institutional and workforce concerns may influence their willingness to optimize it for records management. Therefore, successful implementation requires a balanced approach combining technological investment with adequate training, staff reskilling, institutional readiness, and measures to address concerns about job displacement. Originality/Value: The study provides qualitative empirical evidence on archivists' perspectives regarding blockchain technology within the Nigerian archival context—an area that remains comparatively under-researched.
