The interdisciplinary project of Information Science and its first steps (I)

Objective. This study aimed at analyzing one of the most noting characterizations that Information Science (IS) has receiver over the history, such as the positions that sustain it.Design/Methodology/Approach. Through a bibliographic research, there were revised proposals from two relevant authors (Harold Borko y Tefko Saracevic) to deepen in the IS’ interdisciplinary character. The temporary circumstances in which the IS’ interdisciplinary project is registered was used as an analysis tool.Results/Discussion. The incidence of interdisciplinary movement emerged as a new form of knowledge organization during the foundational years, such as the interdisciplinary character that the IS’ founders assigned to the field.
Conclusions. From the foundational years, IS was proposed as an interdisciplinary science. Harold Borko and Tefko Saracevic were the significant authors in solidify such assumed characterization. The interdisciplinary practice and theory is one of the most remarked elements of the intellectual tasks of our times. From the beginning this has been a constant in the informational field.
Originality/Value. This study has a distinctive note, an approach to the first two most relevant characterizations of IS and its connection with the interdisciplinary movement initiated in the same historical circumstances.
