Abstract

Objective. We examined the significance of the text “Advis pour dresser une bibliothèque”, written by Gabriel Naudé in 1627. This is considered one of the major contributions for the formation of Librarianship.
Design/Methodology/Approach. As perspective, we deepen into the historical coordinates where the author and his work are located, examining some variables that influenced this process. The analysis was carried out by investigating an empirical universe of documents.
Results/Discussion. The personal, social and political circumstances of the author have been discussed, and their incidence in the library, bibliographic and political work produced by Gabriel Naudé.
Conclusions. The “Advis pour dresser une bibliothèque” constituted the major Naudean contribution to Librarianship, where Naudé systematized the library practice of his time, and also sat bases for what later would be known as Library Science.
Originality/Value. This study illustrated the historical significance of Gabriel Naudé as librarian, bibliographer, and political theorist, highlighting the interrelationship of these facets of his intellectual activity.
