Abstract

Presents a general view of the importance of the indexing process in the complex world of communication and bibliographic exchange among librarians. Additionally the involvement of the Rubén Martínez Villena provincial library in Sancti Spíritus with the National Library to develop this process is outlined. The application of polls and interviews of librarians and
users allowed the Rubén Martínez Villena provincial library of Sancti Spíritus to evaluate its indexing policy based on select criteria and show that the policy is carried out by indexers who, in the majority, lack a university  degree, fl uency in other languages, specialization or experience in the activity, although those who are suitably qualifi ed achieve a maximum degree of thoroughness, understand the index terms of several topics, and specifi city Is almost always reached. No concrete strategies exist for them to become familiar with the user’s search interests and to  simultaneously be able to assess the effectiveness of the system. Also,
the library does not have a specifi c indexing policy. Recommendations
are proposed regarding that subject.
