Abstract

Essential elements of the development of scientific communication are tackled as a process unavoidably linked to the development of science itself.
The relationship between scientific communication and scientific production is established. Criteria are indicated with regards to its passage though different historical periods, from the analysis of facts and proposals that permit us to make a division in stages, until arriving at its current state with the formation of networks and scientific communities.
