Abstract

This explains how the promotion of reading in Cuban public libraries is based on the theory of work with readers developed in the former socialist countries and acquired its own Cuban peculiarities, that has been enhanced by studies of the dynamic of reading in the developed libraries in the country. The work not only recollects the theoretical and methodological principles of work with readers, but that also clarifies and updates them, giving a broader idea of what is generally understood by reading promotion in libraries. It provides evidence of how the objectives, methods and forms of promotion are not limited to literary works and reading, how it is not the exclusive domain of public and school libraries and how it can contribute in some way to the management of knowledge.
